Dr Maretha de Waal founded De Waal Research and Development (Pty) Ltd in 2013. She holds a DLitt et Phil degree in Sociology. Maretha has almost 30 years’ experience in the industry. She specialises in the fields of gender, disability and ethics. Maretha was the Director of the Institute for Women’s & Gender Studies at UP from 1998 to 2005, and then acted as the Director of Policy and Research at the Commission for Gender Equality. In 2008, Maretha began her journey as an independent individual contractor, and has done work for the National School of Government, the UP Centre for Human Rights, and UN Women.
We work in academic, research, and consulting environments; both in South Africa and internationally. Our work covers a broad area of education, training, and development consulting with a focus on gender, disability, social justice, and good governance. Our work includes learning framework development, curriculum design, programme facilitation, and assessment of learning programmes. Our research involves aspects of mass media, family, and gender. We have published both nationally and internationally in peer-reviewed journals.
