Abstract
The UN-HABITAT Women in Cities 2012/2013 is a sequel to the UN-HABITAT Women in Cities 2010/2011 study. The Women in Cities 2010/2011 report was based both on strong academic scholarship, and a survey of the historical and generational determinants of gender inequality and deprivation in different interconnected spheres of human settlements development. The 2012/13 survey targets five representative cities in four developing regions (Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean). Studies are being carried out in Johannesburg, Cairo, Kingston, Rio de Janeiro and Bangalore to better understand the dynamics of prosperity and poverty of women and men in cities.
This Background Document provides a gender analysis of available information on what is known of women in Johannesburg. This Background Document contains details of policies, strategies and programmes of the City of Johannesburg that were designed, developed and implemented to promote women development in Johannesburg. The Background Document also contains some discussion of factors contributing to, or deterring, women’s prosperity in the City of Johannesburg. It forms the backdrop to the field study, which is aimed at surveying the gender dimensions that affect women’s likelihood of prosperity, the factors that are or can propel growth and development, as well as the gender constraints that can prevent the city from becoming more prosperous. It describes policies, strategies and actions for achieving women’s prosperity, as it relates to the four dimensions of prosperity, namely: quality of life, productivity, infrastructure, and equity.
